Zadar is a small town in Dalmatia, just one hour and 30 minutes far from Split and I passed through it many times when I was going to some other, “more interesting” place. Actually, I never stopped there for more than a few hours and I paid no attention until my last visit.
I went there with my friend to watch the Davis Cup semi-finals between Croatia and France and liked it so much that I decided to stay there two more days after everything was over. I didn’t see much during the Davis Cup because I spent most of my time in the Kresimir Cosic Hall watching the tennis matches. But, one night spent walking through the Old Town and promenade was enough to spare my wanderlust. The last time I walked through that part of a town I was 12 year old kid. A lot has changed since then. It was end of a season and I didn’t expect so many people roaming around, especially because the weather wasn’t so good. Despite that, narrow streets, bars and restaurants were full and I would be surprised if they were not, just watch the view form “Restaurant Fosa” and add to it delicious Dalmatian food (you can read more about traditional Dalmatian specialities HERE).
Zadar slowly become popular tourist spot. I’m not so surprised about that because there are no many places where you can walk through ancient ruins in the heart of a town. Also, The Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun definitely played their roles in the popularization of this city.
THE SEA ORGAN & GREETING TO THE SUN
Those two are works of art completely powered by nature and they are just few feet away from each other . The Sea Organ is a musical instrument played by waves and Greeting to the Sun is installation that stores solar energy and when the sun goes down, it lights up in various colors. The only flaw of those two places is that they are too crowded especially before the sunset (Zadar has one of the most amazing sunsets). So, if you want avoid that come earlier or even better on the preseason.
STAYING AT FALKENSTEINER HOTEL & SPA LADERA IN PETRCANE (ZADAR)
Hotel is located in the small place Petrcane, 12 km far from Zadar. There is a bus stop near the hotel, but I think car is essential. It’s true oasis of peace, perfect for people who desire privacy. We came late and the cheerful staff welcomed us at the reception desk and gave us the room key. We’ve got suite, the room was really big, but nothing too fancy (especially if I compare it with their Spa) and there was huge balcony with amazing view of sea.
Breakfast was good with a lot of choices and the stuff is always at your service. I noticed that most of them speak fluently German, Italian, English and of course Croatian (three foreign languages, I think that is quite impressive ).
This is something I liked most during our stay here (if I don’t count victory of Croatian team of course). I have never seen spa as huge and equipped as this one. It spreads at 6000 m, include indoor and outdoor pool, huge garden for relaxation, Turkish hamam, Finnish sauna, steam bath and there is a lot more. I was really impressed when I entered the area. Spa consists two separated parts. First one include indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzzi and garden. It’s perfect for families and also, there you can eat some light meal or drink some fresh squeezed juice in Spa bistro.
When I was there it was middle of September, it wasn’t too cold, but neither was for swimming at the outdoor pool so I found some quite place and spent few hours catching sun rays and reading a book before I went to the other part of Spa. Black Spa area is some kind of nude zone, but you can wear a swimsuit or cope of course just don’t be surprised if you see people relaxing on the sun naked. Here, you can go to the sauna (they have few different types, even one with sea panorama), hamam or salt steam bath and after that enjoy in the one of the relaxing zones . You should just choose between waterbeds, dark room, room with the swings or even better try them all like me. I can’t say which one I liked most because I truly enjoyed all of them. If you want to pamper yourself even more book a massage or some of the cosmetic treatments.
Falkensteiner Hotel is listed as one of the leading hotels of the World for a reason. I really enjoyed here. Everyone and everything is very professional and on the level.
