How many times has happened that you spend months in the gym, taking care about the food you eat to get the body you want and then after two weeks of the vacation you have to start all over again? It doesn’t have to be like that anymore. I know that vacation is time to take a break from the usual routine and work, the time when you should give priority to some other things and allow yourself to relax without counting calories, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get fat. Finding the right balance is key. You don’t have to choose between fun things and healthy lifestyle. You can have both and make the most out of your trip without throwing away months of work.
This are the five rules that I always stick to:
1. STAY ACTIVE
There is no reason not to work out just because you are away from home. You don’t need a gym, private instructor and scheduled practice. The only thing you need is the will. Every place has some park where you can go jogging. If that’s too much for you at least walk. You are in the new place, go out, explore and walk as much as you can and of course forget about the elevator, use stairs.
2. REPLACE COFFEE WITH TEA
I know, it is easy to say for someone who never drinks coffee, but this is the thing that truly makes a difference. If you need something to wake you up in the morning drink a cup of green tea. It contains caffeine, increase fat burning and improves physical performance. I drink at least 2L of white and green tea per day (green in the morning and white for the rest of the day). This are the healthiest beverages on the planet, loaded with antioxidants and anti-aging properties. Buy your own is some tea shop (they are much better than those that you can find in the markets and coffee bars) and bring it everywhere you go. I’m sure you will feel the difference.
3. DON’T SKIP MEALS
This is the thing I used to do before I realized how wrong it was. When you are in a new place you want to see as much as possible and when you realize that you are hungry it’s already too late because you didn’t eat for hours and you will probably end up buying the first thing you see and from my experience it won’t be anything healthy. To avoid that don’t ever skip a breakfast and bring some healthy snacks with you (nuts, seeds and dried fruits will give you plenty of energy).
4. SCHEDULE ONE CHEAT DAY
Pick one day when you will allow yourself to taste every little treat you desire and don’t feel guilty because of that. Try local specialties and order that desert you dreamed about, but don’t make it a daily habit. There are so many temptations, they are everywhere and you would be crazy not to allow yourself that little pleasures.
It isn’t what you are eating, but how much you eat that gets you in the trouble with your weight.
5. CHOOSE YOUR ALCOHOL WISELY
Did you know that large beer contains the equivalent calories to a slice of pizza? Cocktails are even worse. Most of the alcoholic drinks contain large amount of carbohydrates and in the case of cocktails, fat as well. That sounds horrifying, but it doesn’t have to be if you choose wisely. There are few low calorie alcoholic drinks (white and red wine, gin, vodka, rum, whiskey) so if you want to drink choose them, but beware of high sugar mixers that can seriously increase calorie intake. Chose lower calorie mixers such as soda, tonic, orange and lime juice.
